The incident happened on Tuesday, Sept. 12 around 3:15 p.m., when members of the City of Rye Police Marine Unit responded to a mayday call on Long Island Sound around two miles south of Milton Harbor in Rye.

According to the department, a good samaritan had noticed a man who had fallen in the water from a vessel in this location and had notified the US Coast Guard after he had reportedly refused any help.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene and found a 33-year-old man in the water suffering from a psychiatric emergency, police said.

The man was then helped out of the water and onto a police patrol vessel before being taken back to Milton Harbor. He was then taken to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The New Rochelle Harbor Patrol, Village of Mamaroneck Police Marine Unit, and the Hempstead Bay Constables also helped in the response to the incident.
